It was a summer evening in London, August 2009. We were walking with my wife along Themes. As we approached the Shakespeare Globe Theatre, we heard some nice and pleasant live music. Sounded cool and interesting, so I lured my wife into the posh pub where a trio was performing.
Drums, double-bass and electro-acoustic guitar was all the instrumentalisation. Plus Steve's (the guitarist) voice. And it was enough, really.
The guys, we found out, are called The Violent Jive. They played unassuming, relaxed and with a great confidence. With their choice of songs and excellent performance they were leading us elegantly through the beautiful evening.
The combination of double-bass and electro-acoustic guitar is usually reserved for jazz musicianship. The style of Violet Jive is not far from that, but it doesn't stop there. To my ears, the influence of Sting's early albums in their music is huge, and this is a compliment. There's a bit of Rockabilly, a bit of Latin and a bit of Trip-hop in their music.
Their music and their performance could easily classified as charming. There's something very pleasant and nice in listening to their music.
Their debut album Far Flung is released in 2009 and my prediction is that there is a great future in front of them.
